HARRISBURG, N.C. (WBTV) - The application for a controversial chemical landfill in Harrisburg was withdrawn by the company -- with intention to resubmit.
Venator Chemicals withdrew their application for a special use permit to build an on-site industrial solid waste landfill for non-hazardous waste, the town of Harrisburg announced on Monday, March 3.
“From the start, the Town of Harrisburg has stood firmly against this landfill,” a town spokesperson wrote in their announcement.

A public meeting about the request ended only five minutes after its start in January after a Venator attorney asked to continue the hearing on March 4. The company said they didn’t know a consultant for the town created a report until the week before the meeting, WBTV previously reported.
The request will no longer be on the agenda for Tuesday’s Board of Adjustment meeting.
Specifically, the application was to “upgrade an outdated settling lagoon,” according to the request. The company said that the lagoon had been in operation since 1976.
“The materials that will be placed in the special dedicated use landfill are non-hazardous and have been rigorously tested to comply with all regulatory requirements,” company representatives said in a statement in January.
Despite the company saying the chemicals were not hazardous and already on site, apprehensions about a chemical landfill were expressed.
“The Town of Harrisburg continues to prioritize the health, safety, and environmental well-being of our community,” wrote a representative from the Town of Harrisburg. “The voices of our residents have played a crucial role in demonstrating this collective commitment to preserving the safety of our Town. We thank our residents for your advocacy through this process.”
A representative with Venator Chemicals told WBTV that the decision to withdraw for now will provide more time with community engagement:
“Venator has withdrawn the application for a special use permit with plans to resubmit. The withdrawal allows additional time for community engagement and to align with the schedule to prepare the proposed location on the property. We are committed to high standards and to working in good faith to meet with Harrisburg leaders, so they have a complete understanding of the facts and the safety of these facilities.”
