CONCORD, N.C. — North Carolina State Superintendent Mo Green visited Concord to host a public listening and learning session Wednesday night. The superintendent is holding eight listening and learning sessions in each of the state’s regions.

During that meeting at Harold Winkler Middle School, parents and teachers were asked to answer four questions. One of those questions asked, "What are the challenges and potential solutions for North Carolina Public Schools?"

In a packed auditorium with hundreds of people, parents and teachers told North Carolina superintendent Mo Green that administrators need to address bullying.

Frank Brown is one of the parents who spoke about the impact bullying had on his children’s mental health.

“I had a son who's actually 36 now that tried to kill himself when he was a senior in high school, and thankfully that didn’t happen, and now, I have a daughter that struggles with anxiety issues,” Brown said.

Green says it’s an issue that must be addressed from the top level down to the classroom. He said it could even require a response from law enforcement.

“I do think there are four things we need to focus on, one that was lifted up this evening, which is regard to having more mental health professionals working with our students,” Green said.

Green said that means getting more counselors, social workers, and school psychologists working with students who are victims of bullying, as well as the students responsible for doing the bullying. Brown said those resources would have helped his children cope with anxiety.

“I’ve seen it with every one of my kids in a different way and they have been bullied and then they begin to think am I supposed to take my life, what am I to do, just to have a resource to help people encourage them and a hotline as well for them to discuss things that they may not feel comfortable with me,” Brown said.

Green said he also wants to look at character development.

We also asked him what type of guidance he is giving districts after President Trump's executive order to dismantle the Department of Education.

Green encourages districts to keep their focus on the dollars that are still coming in and manage the anxiety.

CONCORD, N.C. — Another Avelo Airlines route from Concord will be no more.

The budget airline announced Monday the route between Concord–Padgett Regional Airport and Wilmington Airport in Delaware will end service on Thursday. The airline cited "low demand" for the route as the reason for the cancellation. As part of this route, the airline promoted it as an alternative to the larger international airport in nearby Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The airline had already announced the discontinuation of service between Concord and Bradley International Airport near Hartford, CT on March 30. The airline cited the consolidation of its domestic service to Connecticut's Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) as the reason for the change. (The airline does plan to continue international service at Bradley International Airport.)

Passengers impacted by the changes will receive a refund or option to rebook onto other flights, according to the airline.

The airline says this change allows them to refocus staff and equipment onto more popular routes.

Despite these changes, the airline still plans to launch previously announced routes to Nashville, Tennessee and Daytona Beach, Florida in April.

FROM DECEMBER: Avelo Airlines adds 2 routes, new Concord-based jobs

When the airline announced the new routes in December, they also announced 50 new Concord-based jobs.

"It also means jobs by basing two aircraft here. We're basing two 737s here at this airport," Jim Olson, the head of marketing for Avelo Airlines, told WCNC Charlotte in December. "These are high-quality jobs. They're pilots, flight attendants, airport customer service and aircraft technician jobs."

At the time, Olson said the airline had flown 40,000 people since first arriving in May.

Since launching in May, the airline also added service to Lakeland Linder International Airport near Lakeland, Florida.

Concord–Padgett Regional Airport offers passengers an alternative to the larger Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The airport in Concord offers commercial passenger service through Allegiant and Avelo airlines.

Following the route changes, the Avelo Airlines schedule from Concord will be as follows:
